Coworking at HustleCo: 4 reasons coworking is better than working from home

We began thinking about HustleCo as a coworking space concept in Calgary in mid 2016. After having been in business with QuadRipple for over a year we started to realize a few things, one of them being that working from home sucks. Besides the obvious advantages of being able to work right out of bed and not having to worry about packing a lunch, overall, working from home is far from ideal. Looking for office space proved to be far too expensive for us and didn’t offer strong enough value to take the plunge.

We looked elsewhere and discovered the concept of coworking. After visiting all the spaces in Calgary, we were fascinated by the energy and community around these established locations but realized there is huge potential for growth in the coworking space. So if you already work from home, we’re sure you can sympathize with the disadvantages listed below. Once you’ve had enough, we invite you to come considering coworking at HustleCo for relief of those work at home symptoms.

Loneliness

This is by far the greatest disadvantage of working from home. In school, you study with and around people. At university, you study with and around people. At work, you work with and around people. When you work from home, you’re on your own. Humans are social beings that thrive in communities and limited human interaction can lead to deterioration in mental health. This ultimately will affect your workplace productivity and life enjoyment. The quick fix for this is to leave, and perhaps pick up a coffee for some face to face human interaction, but this is no replacement for continuous proximity, the second point.

Proximity

As Tony Robbins says, proximity is power. It is important to constantly surround yourself with people that will help you grow. This point is black and white and the math is simple. No matter what, the more time you spend around people that can help you grow, the more chances you have to grow on a daily basis. You’re never going to bump into someone at the home office that could be a huge asset to your personal life or business, unless maybe an interesting door-to-door salesperson if they are still out there. Coworking at HustleCo Workspace, you will be surrounded by people that can help you grow in your business.

Psychology

It can sometimes be a challenge to differentiate between work and play when you operate from a home office. This is your home. It’s where you sleep, eat, relax, enjoy, party, drink, you get the picture. While some of these acts can happen from time to time in the office, it is important to make the distinction between work and play more often than not. Psychologically, when you are sitting at a desk, surrounded by others who are working, there is a greater propensity to continue working. In a home office the distinction between work and play can be a bit grey and you need to rely much more on self-discipline. Coworking provides this needed separation.

Legitimacy

Running a successful business out of your home is a legitimate practice, however, that’s not the way society sees it. It’s not always the most professional or appropriate to invite clients to your house for a meeting. Especially if last night’s lasagna dish is still soaking in the sink and there’s a couple beer cans lying around. Coworking gives you the legitimacy of operating from a commercial location with access to professional meeting rooms without breaking the bank.
