As we say on our HustleCo homepage and in our social media descriptions, HustleCo will foster a winning and athletic work environment. So what exactly do we mean by that? Running a business or being a freelancer can be a stressful gig. There are so many responsibilities a business owner or entrepreneur has to endure and it doesn’t help that it’s not always stable. Entrepreneurs need to be proactive and not reactive, and have to make many and sometimes very tough decisions. Entrepreneurs are some of the hardest working and stressed out people on the planet, however, they also tend to be some of the most interesting. On the flipside, the majority of Canadians do not enjoy their full-time jobs and put up with boredom in exchange for stable paycheck. So which one are you? For the fellow entrepreneurs alongside us, we stand with you! We know the challenges, we know the fear, we know the failure, but it’s all worth it in the end. One of the most critical aspects that entrepreneurs neglect and overlook, besides accounting, organization, marketing, innovation, is their mental health and psychology they start every day with.
The 80/20 rule
After watching countless TED talks, listening to multiple podcasts, and reading many books by successful entrepreneurs, and implementing it, this one comes up often. 80% of your personal or business success is attributed to your psychology and 20% of your success is attributable to the mechanics of it. While we don’t believe in hard rules, this is certainly a good guide to drive the growth of your business by. It’s simple to grow personally or grow your business, but it’s not easy. Everyone knows what it takes, that’s the 20%. If you want to lose weight, you need to exercise, count your calories, and cut simple carbs and processed foods. It really is that simple! But is it easy? Hell no! With drive thrus, chocolate bars at the cash, and putting on those shoes for a run at 6am, no thanks. In a business sense, it’s the same thing. You know what it takes to grow your business! Innovate a product or service that the people need, and market the heck out it. Pickup the phone, generate content, attend events, work more than 10 hours a day, and you will be successful, it’s that simple. Once again, it’s not easy. There’s a girl on your mind, or a hockey game at the bar that’s calling your name which takes away from you ultimate goals. That’s where the 80% comes in. You need to want your goals so bad, you are willing to do whatever it takes to achieve them, including ditching the hockey game or putting on those sneakers at 6am.
How to implement this psychology?
Athletes don’t enter a competition or game to lose. They enter to win. Just like all our coworking members at HustleCo, they are in business to win! There are some techniques to implement this winning psychology, one of them is to surround yourself in an environment that pushes you to look fear in the face, tell it to fuck off, and take action! We embrace that at HustleCo. The beauty about motivational and positive psychology is that it is contagious, once you start, you can’t stop and there will be nothing that will ever stand in the way of your business and personal success as long as you keep trying.
“I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” – Thomas Edison
There are many ways to work on developing that winning psychology, but below are 4 quick tips to help implement an athletic and winning psychology today.
“Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence.” – Helen Keller
1. Tell fear to fuck off: No matter what, the success is all dependent on your decisions. Don’t let fear control your decision making and always ask yourself, “what’s the worst that can happen” or “what am I afraid of if I take action.” You will reach a turning point once you become more afraid of inaction than the fear of action.
“It is hard to fail, but it is worse never to have tried to succeed.” – Theodore Roosevelt
2. Set goals: Set hard goals. Numbers, things, outcomes. What do you want to achieve in X amount of time. Most importantly, write down why you want to achieve them. The why factor will be one of the largest drivers to keep you doing what is best for your business. Review them everyday. Every successful person can attribute their success to setting a goal in their mind, and doing what it takes to get there, even if the goal is for selfish reasons. Did you know Bill Gates first hacked the school computers so that he could put all the women he had a crush on in his classes? How’s he doing now!?
“Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible.” – Tony Robbins
3. Music: Some of the best ways to instantly transform your state into one of empowering psychology is to listen to empowering and uplifting music and start moving. Don’t just listen to it passively, feel the beat and embrace it. Dance, no matter how silly you look. There’s a reason people have celebrated with dancing for thousands of years. If dancing is not your thing, some hard gangsta rap can do the trick too. Barack Obama, a great public speaker, has been seen listening and rapping to Lose Yourself by Eminem prior to some seriously big speeches.
“Without music, life would be a mistake.” – Friedrich Nietzsche
4. Read empowering literature: There’s a reason why HustleCo is a coworking space loaded with quotes from successful individuals. If you can learn from others, you can save yourself a lot of time. Just read the quotes below, see how they instantly make you feel and give you that feeling like you’re ready to take on the world? That is a peak state and that is how every entrepreneur needs to be to achieve their goals they desire.
“If I have seen further than others, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants.” – Sir Isaac Newton
